"Success is not something that can be defined merely by how many hurdles you've crossed: there will always be more hurdles ahead of you."
I have decided that 2013 is going to be my year. And not "my year" in the terms I think of every time that ball drops, the champagne is poured and the confetti flies. This year, there was none of that. This year there was a rumpled t-shirt and torn jeans, one beer and a couple sodas; this year, there was hurrying to get myself away from my computer and in front of a television set just to make sure the countdown actually happened. This year, January 1st came softly.
I spent the following days working on my photography business, putting things together one day at a time. I reviewed the mistakes I made in 2012, most of them revolving around either finances or my lack of follow through. I realized I was terrified of this business, terrified of making it on my own and giving everything I had to a little dream that continued to bloom despite my feeble attempts at watering it. What if I was actually good enough at photography to make it a real, full-time career? What if I became truly successful at doing something that I didn't have professional training or a college degree in? What would that mean for my life plan?
What if I got everything I ever wanted?
Now some people would say that was the goal all along, to start something small and watch it grow into something big. It's our societal calling as Americans to push ourselves to excel at what we do, to reach the American dream by working hard at "something." Photography is my something. And while I am insanely proud of how far I've come and how much I've learned, I'm still doubtful I can make it. Success is not something that can be defined merely by how many hurdles you've crossed: there will always be more hurdles ahead of you. But, this year, I will work on anticipating how high I'm going to have to jump... before I even get there.
This blog was originally designed to keep my clients informed of any upcoming sales or special events in my photo-tastic world. After thinking about it a little, I'll let my Facebook page take care of that (click HERE for the world of Avis Nicole Photography via Facebook!). This blog will document the continued efforts and struggles of a creative small business owner (me!) and focus on tips and tricks of starting a photography business. Please save the URL to your favs, pay it forward by sharing with your friends through social media outlets, and get in touch with me often to let me know what questions you have and what topics you would like to see explored here. Trust me, if you want to know how to do something, so does someone else... probably me!
Thank you and keep clicking!
